Second-Hand Shop: Fix & Sell

Buy it broken. Fix it by hand.

For forty years your grandfather Rıza Usta repaired radios and record players in Tahtakale, Istanbul. The shop is yours now, along with a ₺6,000 rent debt to the landlord, Hüsnü Bey. Four weeks, one instalment a week, or the shutter comes down.

Inside the game

One shop. Four weeks.

Five visitors come through the door each day; some are selling, some are buying. Radios, record players, cassette players, tube TVs and cameras pass through your hands. As your reputation grows, so do buyers’ budgets, and every Monday the local paper brings the street’s news.

Don’t take the seller’s word.

Not every seller who says “it worked yesterday” is telling the truth. Press the power switch, find the fault and take a closer look: a missing screw, a burnt smell, a freshly painted back panel. Ask for 10% or 20% off; you get one try, and if you push too hard the seller leaves.

Repairs are done by hand.

Each of the nine faults is its own small repair game: plug in a cable, swap fuses and valves, thread a belt, clean a tape head or a lens, solder a capacitor onto a TV board. Fix the same fault three times and you master it.

Sell from the shelf, keep your word.

Show a buyer something from the shelf; you get one counter-offer. Sell broken items honestly “as is” and deliver orders on time. A flea market, a power cut, collector day, rain and a street festival change how the day goes.

Once the debt is paid.

Buy the deed, take on Burak as your apprentice and keep going in endless mode, where typewriters and wristwatches arrive. Today’s Counter is one daily puzzle, the same for everyone. There are three modes: Relaxed, Normal and Master.

A day in the shop, shutter to shutter.

The shutter goes up, five visitors come by, and the day is settled in the evening. Every seventh day Hüsnü Bey collects his instalment.
